The Word Nonsense

When was the last time you actually used the word “nonsense” to someone you thought was either talking rubbish or just plain wrong in what they were saying?

It was one of my Grandmothers favourite words and she put real meaning behind them if she thought someone had ‘gone over the top’

True, it is certainly not politically correct or even good manners to say to someone that they are talking a load of rubbish. These days we all tend more or less, to simply change the subject rather than confront them and cause an argument.

Does this mean we are more tolerant of nonsense than our parents were? I think we are all fed so much rubbish every day that we no longer remark on it. The sad thing is that a load of this nonsense is fed to us by our media.

Newspaper editors over the years have come out with some real headline bloopers. We all know them to be utter nonsense and have a good laugh. Some of us even send them into Jay Leno for his audience to enjoy. These are the nonsense ones that are easily distinguished and usually have several meanings which are why they are so funny.

The sad nonsense I’m talking about here is the total nonsense stuff we are fed daily by our politicians via the media and we can’t prove or disprove them.

We are reliant on our media to do that for us. But investigative journalism seems to be a thing of the past since our managing directors now feel more responsibility to their shareholders rather than to their readers and they are wondering why newspaper circulation is declining.

The world has become a nonsense place in many respects because we the people have not called so many things as nonsense when we should have.

The internet and all its hypey sales letters is a prime example. We all say we dislike the hype but no one seems prepared to say it is nonsense. Just because we all know the majority of the promises made in most of these sales letters are dubious at best; why do we just ignore the extravagant promises and not label them as the nonsense they are?

So now we have developed an arena where nonsense is gathered, admired, hyped legitimately, examined, torn apart, swiped, laughed with or at but most of all enjoyed and everyone is welcome to contribute. After all, its just plain nonsense.
